ATLANTIC MACKEREL, BOSTON MACKEREL OR MACKEREL (SCOMBER SCOMBRUS) belongs to the Scombridae family. (Bluefish)

Long and slightly compressed body covered with very small scales. The eyes are protected by an adipose eyelid. It has two dorsal fins, a few small ones nearby its tail. It is blue-greenish with a lot of black broad sinuous oblique and very marked lines, white silver sides and belly, without dark marks.

The mackerel can reach a size up to 50 cm and a weight of 500 grams or more, however, the most common length is around 30 cm and weight around 250-350 grams. It is an oily fish.

Obtaining of the product:

  • Extractive fishing by trawling and with fishing net. Capture zone is the Northwest Atlantic (FAO27)

Presentation of the product:

  • Entire fish and refrigerated in water, ice and salt.
  • It is an abundant and very valued fish, even though the bulk of catches is used to produce conserves and also to fatten longlines and pots.
